The Big Dipper holds a very important position in traditional Chinese culture and is regarded as a very significant constellation. The Big Dipper, as the name suggests, is composed of seven different stars forming a shape similar to a spoon, and its orientation is close to the north. When ancient Chinese people observed celestial phenomena, they found their shapes similar to "water dipper", and thus called them the "Big Dipper". The names of the seven stars are respectively: Tianshu, Tianxuan, Tianji, Tianquan, Yuheng, Kaiyang and Yaoguang. In different seasons and at different times of the night, it appears in different directions in the sky. Therefore, the ancients determined the season based on the direction pointed by the handle of the big Dipper at the beginning of dusk: if the handle of the big dipper points east, it is spring all over the world. The handle of the Dipper guides the world to summer. When the handle of the dipper points westward, all over the world is autumn. When the handle of the Dipper points north, winter ensues throughout the land.

Experimental purpose:
1. Understand the composition of the Big Dipper.
2. Have a preliminary understanding of astronomical knowledge.

Beside Kaiyang Star and Yaoguang Star, there are two other small stars. Due to their relatively weak light, they do not draw much attention. The one on the left is called Zuo Fu and the one on the right is called You Bi.

The Big Dipper is composed of seven stars: Tianshu, Tianxuan, Tianji, Tianquan, Yuheng, Kaiyang and Yaoguang. The ancient Han people associated these seven stars and imagined them as the shape of a ladle for scooping wine in ancient times.
Tian Shu, Tian Xuan, Tian Ji and Tian Quan form the Dou body, which was called Kui in ancient times.
Yuheng, Kaiyang and Yaoguang together form the handle of the dou, which was called "biao" in ancient times.

The Big Dipper appears in different positions in the sky at different times of the night and in different seasons. Therefore, ancient people determined the seasons based on the direction pointed by the handle of the Dipper at dawn: if the handle of the Dipper points east, it is spring all over the world. The handle of the Dipper guides the world to summer. When the handle of the dipper points westward, all over the world is autumn. When the handle of the Dipper points north, winter ensues throughout the land.
The Big Dipper is named α, β, γ, δ, ε, ζ, and η in sequence from the top of the dipper to the end of the handle. Ancient Han Chinese astronomers respectively called them Tianshu, Tianxuan, Tianji, Tianquan, Yuheng, Kaiyang, and Yaoguang. If a straight line is extended outward from "Tianxuan" through "Tianshu", about five times longer, a star as bright as the Big Dipper can be seen. This is the North Star.

The Big Dipper is part of the Ursa Major constellation. From a graphic perspective, the Big Dipper is located at the tail of Ursa Major. Among these seven stars, six are of magnitude 2 and one is of magnitude 3. By connecting the two stars at the mouth of the Dipper and extending about five times in the direction of the Dipper, the North Star can be found. The Star Recognition Song goes: "To recognize stars, one starts from the Big Dipper and then expands from north to west." Beginners in star recognition can start looking for other constellations from the Big Dipper in sequence. The seven stars in Ursa Major arranged in a spoon shape. Ancient people attached great importance to the Beidou system because it could be used to identify directions and determine seasons.

The four stars, Tianshu, Tianxuan, Tianji and Tianquan, form the "Big Dipper" of the Big Dipper. The three stars in the shape of the handle are respectively - Yuheng, Kaiyang and Yaoguang. The star in the center of the handle of the ladle is called "Kaiyang", and there is a fourth-magnitude companion star named "Fu" 11 minutes away. Kaiyang Star and Fu Star form an optical binary, which can be identified by the naked eye. Kaiyang and Fuxing are also physical objects visible to the naked eye throughout the sky

The position of the Big Dipper in the night sky varies with the seasons. Therefore, the ancient people of our country determined the seasons based on its positional changes. The Ganshi Star Classic states: "The Big Dipper is called the Seven States, the feudal lords of heaven, and also the imperial chariot." The emperor sat on the Big Dipper and inspected the four directions, determining the four seasons and distinguishing between cold and heat. The ancient book 鹖 guanzi records: "When the ladle points eastward, the world is full of spring; When the ladle points south, it's summer all over the world. The ladle points westward, and all over the world is autumn. The ladle points northward, and it's winter all over the world. In ancient times, the North Star was regarded as a symbol of God, and the Big Dipper was the imperial chariot that God rode on his Tours of the world. The year began in spring, and at this time the Big Dipper was in the east, so God began his tour from the east. Therefore, the "Yi Zhuan" states: "The emperor is born of Zhen," and the Zhen hexagram is in the east. [1]
Among the Big Dipper, "Yuheng" is the brightest, with a brightness almost approaching that of first-magnitude stars. "Tianquan" is dim and is a third-magnitude star. The other five are all second-order stars. Near "Kaiyang", there is a very small companion star

It is called "Fu", and it has always attracted people's attention with its beautiful and clear appearance. It is said that when ancient Arabs conscripted soldiers, they used it as a "test star" to examine the eyesight of the soldiers.
The Big Dipper is always in slow relative motion in the sky. Among them, five stars move in the same direction at approximately the same speed, while "Tianshu" and "Yaoguang" move in opposite directions. Therefore, during the long course of cosmic transformation, the shape of the Big Dipper will undergo significant changes. In 100,000 years, we will no longer be able to see this ladder-shaped structure.
The Big Dipper is also commonly referred to as "Beidou". Not far from the northernmost celestial pole, seven bright stars are arranged in a dipper shape (see the picture). Except for δ (Tianquan) which is a 3rd magnitude star, the other six stars are all 2nd magnitude stars. If you connect the first two stars of the Big Dipper and extend it about five times the distance towards the mouth of the dipper, you can find the North Star, which is often used as a sign to indicate directions and identify constellations. In addition, by extending along the curve of the handle of the Big Dipper and drawing an arc, one will encounter a large horn of 21 bright stars, namely Alpha Bootes.
