CHATEAU DU BERGEY – Fronsac AOC

MEDALLE D’Or AU CONCOURS DE BORDEAUX 2018~2019

Winery Introduction: (presentation

Chateau du Bergey is located in the Fronsac appellation d 'Origine Controlee on the right bank of Bordeaux, beside the Dordogne River. It is a small gem surrounded by famous chateaux such as Chateau Haut Carles and Chateau Beausejour. Covering an area of 7 hectares, it is mainly composed of small clay slopes and chalky soil. This is the cradle of grape cultivation and wine production in the Bordeaux region. It boasts the most suitable soil for Merlot's growth. The continuous hills and slopes, along with the passage of rivers, have a significant impact on this vineyard, all of which endow Merlot with an unparalleled vivid acidity. The owner of the estate chose to let the wild grass grow naturally among the nurseries because he believed that these grasses could help lock in the moisture of the soil. Even if there was a lot of rainfall during the harvest season, the weight of each fruit would not decrease as a result, and the accumulation of sugar would not be reduced.

The winery still retains the wine cellar built in 1878. At that time, it was an important port where winegrowers transported barrels of raw wine through the Dordogne River to Libourne and Bordeaux for distribution around the world.

Owner's Profile: (vigneron

Olivier Goujon has been passionate about wine-making since childhood. At the age of 12, he began to help out at the family winery. Sometimes in autumn, he and his friends would go to the Loire region to help their friends harvest grapes. He completed his studies related to wine-making in 1989 and learned from his grandfather Henry. Henri Goujon took over Chateau Magondeau from his hands until 1996, when his wife Pascale joined the administration and sales of the chateau.

They hired Tieri. Thierry Jouan serves as a consultant for the winemaker. This magical blender strives to achieve the perfect balance at the time of bottling with precise control over the ripeness of the grapes. Every wine tasting and experiment is conducted in his laboratory in Libourne, as he believes that only in an undisturbed external environment can the most accurate judgments be made.

Tasting: (degustation

Dry red wine with 100% Merlot content has never been easy to produce. This was the right choice made by Olivier after years of trying to blend Cabernet varieties, because Cabernet cannot fully mature. Rather than following the "crowd" and compromising, it's better to choose to be as perfect as possible, even though this may seem a bit unconventional. The fresh strawberry aroma emitted by Merlot, its balanced structure and fine tannins, along with the just-right hint of acidity that dances lightly on the tip of the tongue, all bring immense pleasure.
